There’s no denying Ontario is great place for cheese lovers.

Just last week, it was announced that the best cheese in the world is actually made just a few hours outside Toronto. The creamy, gouda-style Lankaaster from Ontario cheesemonger Margaret Peters won top prize at the annual Global Cheese Awards in Somerset, England.

Aged Lankaaster was just under two years old when crowned the winner among 167 categories including heavy-hitters like Parmigiano Reggiano.  The two-year-old Ontario cheese beat out hundreds of whey more established cheddars as well, to be crowned the Global Supreme Champion of cheese.

As for what makes the Lankaaster so exceptional, Margaret explained: ?You eat a piece of it and you want to go in a closet alone and keep eating it.?  We couldn’t agree more — with notes of caramel, butterscotch, pineapple and of course, butter, it’s a fantastic creamy textured, intense, yet simultaneously mellow cheese.
