There’s a new ciderhouse in Durham Region – and it’s serving up some pretty unique heritage ciders, crafted from 100% Ontario apples.
Slabtown Cider Co. is located just outside Uxbridge, Ontario on 90 acres of family-owned orchard. Their apple trees and rootstock are a mix of heritage trees found on the property and some that were transplanted from Siloam Orchards – previously located northwest of Durham 8.
Way back when, Siloam was once a lumber mill town nicknamed Slabtown because of all the wood slabs you’d find piled around the tiny town. The lumber mill and town have long since disappeared, but the story remains through the branding of Slabtown Cider Co.
At any given time, they’ve got at least 15 ciders on offer in their bottle shop and on tap in their restaurant. They come in some unconventional varieties including Honey Habenero (pictured above, a favorite of ours!), Mint Cucumber, and Blackcurrant.
Their Founder’s Dry is a good place to start for those looking to understand their cidermaking style. It’s clean, crisp and offers a refreshing apple taste. It’s quite dry with a good amount of tartness – as any good Ontario should be.
For those looking to sip ciders on the property, Slabtown offers a restaurant and sprawling seasonal patio. You can order flights of cider and pair them with their classic ciderhouse fare. It’s open Thursday – Sunday, but be sure to check their website for details before arriving.
On the menu, you’ll find creative wood-fired pizzas like the BBQ Rib featuring pulled ribs, sautéed onions, mushrooms, mozzarella, smoked gouda, house cider BBQ sauce; pastas and epic burgers. We recommend the Bison Burger with pancetta, apple chutney and that house-made cider BBQ sauce.
Slabtown Cider is a passport stop on the Great Taste of Ontario. Make sure to check in when you visit!
