Order Your Taste the Bay Picnic
So here’s the deal. We personally think enjoying a picnic along Georgian Bay should be on everyone’s summer bucket list. In fact, we recently wrote a blog about our five fav spots to do just that.
Farm2Door and Midland Food Tours have recently partnered up to offer baskets Fridays and Saturdays now through October and they’re stuffed with deliciousness. Think baguettes, pretzels, cheese…you get it.
If you’d like to order yours, you can call Farm 2 Door during open hours or order online through MidlandFoodTours.ca at least 48 hours in advance. You can order a basket for two people or four people in deluxe or regular.
Deluxe means you get it in a beautiful gram-worthy picnic basket that gets returned at the end of the day. If low-key is more your thing, the equally respectable regular comes to you in a cooler bag. Get all the details.
Purveyors Featured in the Basket
So what can you expect in the basket? A whole lot!
FreshBaked, Midland
Picnickers will be delighted to find some tasty treats from FreshBaked in Midland including a baguette and soft pretzels- yum!
Run by professional chef and artisan baker, Jennifer McConnell, FreshBaked is known for their freshly-baked donuts and cakes as well as their culinary studio where guests can come and take classes from Jennifer (brunch, anyone?) or invite Jennifer into their home.
Milford Bay, Bracebridge
The folks at Farm2Door have sourced a beautiful smoked trout paté for their picnics right from the source at Milford Bay in Bracebridge. It goes perfectly on that baguette if you ask us!
Celebrating 50 years in business this year, Milford Bay is a well-known trout farm and smoke house throughout Simcoe County and the Muskokas. Trust us, you’ll want to take this smooth paté on every picnic!
The Original Gianetto’s, Midland
A well-known name in Midland, Gianetto’s Fruit Market was a staple in the town for years. It was started by Madeline Gianetto, an Italian immigrant to Midland.
The business started on the front lawn in 1924 and by 1933 the storefront downtown was opened!
While fruits and veggies were the name of the game, Madeline and her oldest son Nio began experimenting in the kitchen and created a cottage cheese salad that was a mix of garlicky goodness and onion.
Over time, this salad simply became “Gianetto’s Dip” and well friends, you’ll find that piece of history right in your Taste the Bay basket!
PJ Meats, Barrie
A staple at the Southern Georgian Bay Farmers’ Market, PJ Meats is located in Barrie and they create cured meats (some of which you’ll find in your picnic) that are to die for!
If you want to get your hands on some, you can of course get some in your basket but also visit PJ at the farmers’ market and also check out some of his Italian-style focaccia.
Bulbs of Fire, Tiny
La piece de resistance in your picnic? A jar of smoked black garlic jelly from Bulbs of Fire in Tiny. Run by the same family as Farm2Door, Bulbs of Fire was started by Bart and his family who immigrated to Simcoe County from Holland in 2006.
What started as a family garden with a special garlic plot, quickly grew to people stopping by to get Bart’s expertise on garlic and try to buy his personal stock! Of course, it was time to plant more garlic.
Today, Bulbs of Fire plants 35 different varieties of garlic and creates some real magic with it including, of course, this smoked black garlic jelly. It goes perfectly with the cheese and meat in the picnic basket but we recommend grabbing another jar for yourself to add to grilled cheese sandwiches at home – yum!
Belicious, Whitchurch-Stouffville
Created by a family of beekeepers dedicated to crafting delicious honey, the Belicious sparkling honey beverages found in each basket are refreshing with a tinge of sweetness.
Coming in varieties like grapefruit, orange blossom, lemoncelo and mojito lime, each one offers a refreshing, alcohol-free beverage option to be savoured.
Ontario Cheese
Each basket also comes stocked with cheese from an Ontario supplier. You’ll have to open your picnic to find out which you got!
