Ontario’s Best Winter Farmers’ Markets

Though the first snowfall of the year usually brings many good things with it (hot cocoa, snowmen, holiday cheer), sometimes it also means seasonal businesses are packing it in for the rest of the year.

However, for some, not even Jack Frost can stand in their way, so for those of you who are also unwilling to let winter stand in your way of local produce, here is our list of the Farmers’ Markets that remain open year-round.

Market Days at Montgomery’s Inn, Etobicoke

Wednesdays from 2 pm – 6 pm

Originally built in 1830 as a Georgian-style inn, Montgomery’s Inn now operates as a museum open to the public. The market features fresh-baked bread from the Inn’s wood-fired oven, local and organic produce, meats, and cheeses. This year, the market will feature live music and complimentary hot apple cider and gingerbread cookies with donation. There are also vendors like Feast On® certified Molly B’s Gluten-Free Kitchen offering up their delicious GF baked goods and Ontario Water Buffalo Co. with meat pies and water buffalo cheeses.

Bonus: tours of the inn are free on Market Days and often include tastings.

Guelph Farmers’ Market, Guelph

Saturdays, 7 am – 12 pm

This market has been operating for over 180 years and is a staple in it’s community, though it has had several homes throughout the years, the market has never left Market Square.

You will find herbs, baked goods, handmade jewelry and pottery as well as local dairy, meats, and produce.

Collingwood Winter Farmers’ Market, Collingwood

Saturdays, 10 am – 1 pm

Located in Trinity United Church, this winter market is only a few years old but already very popular. You can expect to find the local goodies and crafts that are also available during the summer months, but if you get there early enough, you will also find hearty, homemade meals ready for you to enjoy.

Evergreen Brick Works, Toronto

Saturdays, 9 am – 1 pm

The Farmers Market at Evergreen is open all year and is known for being one of the best in the city. Pick up your local favourites, stop by Cafe Belong for lunch, and take a stroll through the Brick Works wintery wonderland – a perfect Saturday in the city.

Bonus: While at the market, stop by Evergreen’s Winter Village, which offers skating and winter activities for the whole family!

Sudbury Winter Market, Sudbury

Saturdays, 9:30 am – 2 pm

This is the second year of the Sudbury Winter Market, after a successful pilot year.  It was put together by local vendors who decided it was about time that Sudbury had a market that continued through the Christmas season.

It is an indoor market that features an array of vendors serving baked goods, clothing and jewelry from local artisans, and ready to go meals.

Peterborough Regional Farmers’ Market

Saturdays, 8 am – 1 pm

Located in the lower level of Peterborough Square in downtown Peterborough, this market features an extensive list of top-notch vendors that are sure to have what you’re looking for even in the winter months.

All primary producers at the Peterborough Regional Farmers’ Market grow or produce 100% of the product they sell, and each vendor is third party verified. Look for unique vendors like Kawartha Country Wines – the first and only winery in the Kawarthas, or Kendal Hills Game Farm, a certified Feast On® Preferred Purveyor.

Simcoe Farmers’ Market, Norfolk County

Thursdays, 9 am – 4 pm

This Farmers’ Market is open year-round and features 30-50 farmers, producers, and artisans. It is not just a place to go to buy food; it;’s a place to interact with the community. Spend your Saturday morning chatting with neighbours and vendors while sampling some local goodies.

Barrie Farmers’ Market, Barrie

Saturdays, 8 am – 12 pm

You’ll find this market at Barrie City Hall, rain or shine, winter or summer – and it has been around longer than Canada itself! It offers more than just a shopping experience, Barrie Farmers’ Market is known for its atmosphere just as much as for the quality of their produce and other market goods.
