Three Ways to Spend the Perfect Day Snowshoeing in Sault Ste. Marie

Sault Ste. Marie offers snowshoeing lovers a delicious escape from the everyday. You can snowshoe on well-marked, meticulously groomed trail systems where you’ll find frozen waterfalls and incredible views from atop lookouts. Here are three ways to enjoy this outdoor activity – and work up an appetite!

Start you adventure in the Hiawatha Highlands. The area offers over 50km of ski trails, 14km of Snowshoeing, as well as Fat Biking trails through whispering pine forest. Within city limits, parking and trailheads are located on Landslide road and as an added bonus, there’s rentals available at this popular spot.

For snowshoe-ers, there’s 9km of trail to be explored on two main snowshoe trail systems with different terrain. Pinder Trails is a 2 and 3 km trail with flat terrain, while Crystal Trail offers 4km with more challenge and hilly terrain. The highlight along these routes is the magnificent frozen Crystal Falls.

For those with their own gear, we recommend hitting the golf course – but not for golf!

Crimson Ridge Golf Course offers over 15km of scenic snowshoeing trails around their property. They’re marked, groomed and open 7 days a week. When you’ve had to your fill, book a table at Embers Grill & Smokehouse on the property. In the summer months, their sprawling patio is the draw but don’t let that fool you. They offer a rotating menu of comforting classics to warm even the most tired bones in winter months. Enjoy smoked, barbeque classics like brisket and ribs, or indulge in one of their famous cut in-house steaks.

We also recommend trekking the Sault Golf Club. Within city limits, parking and trailhead for this easy but beautiful route are located at the Sault Golf Course on Queen Street. The trail start is at the Pro Shop. Sault Golf Club offers marked groom trails, open 7 days a week.  After working up an appetite, you can sit down for a hot meal at Mulligan’s Irish Pub. They offer classic Irish fair over-looking the St. Mary’s River. Locals love the ‘Pachos’ – an Irish twist on a pub favorite. House made potato chips and topped with melted cheese, nacho veggies and drizzled with their avocado ranch. What a way to end the day!
