In Toronto, for many people, Saturday is traditionally a market day. It's a chance to catch up with friends, stock up for the week ahead and in the farming community, come together to share your wares. With the Saturday Farmers Market at the Evergreen Brick Works suspended to slow the spread of COVID-19, the market vendors have come together to offer a Farm in a Box. Every week, it will be filled with an assortment of local produce, cheese and bread for pick up at the now empty market space.
This week's box, as an example, features Onions, Carrots, Jerusalem Artichokes, Hakurei Greens, Spinach, Oyster Mushrooms, Bread (baked by the team at Cafe Belong!), Cheese, Hummus and cold-stored Apples.
We know that now more than ever, we need to find new ways to connect and help our local food system stay strong. Virtual markets, grocery delivery and good food boxes like these are part of the solution.
How It Works:
1) Boxes are filled with a selection of produce from local farmers.
A natural part of the local food economy, the produce listed is what we are planning to offer this week, but are subject to change. With local food seasonality comes old favourites and something new for you to try with your newfound time at home!
2) Order your box through Shopify by signing up for a time slot.
The pre packed bags are $50, with the option for additional items while supplies last. Bags must be pre-ordered and paid for in advance through Shopify. There is no option for payment at pick-up. Proceeds go directly to our local food farmers, artisans, and supporting Evergreen's food and market programs.
3) Pick up your box at Evergreen Brick Works.
The pick-up location will be in the Pavilions, where the outdoor Saturday Farmers Market is usually held. To limit the number of people at the pick-up location, a maximum of 25 order pick-ups are permitted every 30 minutes. Please help us limit the number of individuals by arriving at the pick-up location alone. Evergreen will have protocols in place at the pick-up location to ensure we all maintain recommended levels of social distancing.
