Perfect Weekends: Heathcote

Heathcote might very well be the tiniest town we’ve ever suggested you visit. It’s little more than an intersection, yet it’s home to a myriad of delicious experiences.

This tiniest of towns sits in the heart of the Apple Pie Trail, along the shore of the Beaver River. Everything from the pace to the taste of this place is determined by the current. It’s a great home base for anyone looking to explore the region at their own pace.

Here’s how our Perfect Weekend in Heathcote would play out.

1. The town is home to Free Spirit Tours which offers up paddling and snow shoeing experiences in the region. They’ll drive you to a drop point and take you on a guided adventure down the river or through the valley. They’ve also got a well-stocked ‘edible garden’ where you can learn about wild foods and munch of salad greens you picked yourself!

2. Free Spirit Tours also offers a ‘tiny house’ for those looking for a unique place to rest their head in the area. Located at the back of the lush property, this little house is just big enough for two and offers up stunning views of the river and neighbouring farmland. Book it via AirBnB.

3. Across the road, you”ll find Blackbird Pie Company, home to what could quite possibly be Ontario’s best apple pie–and a pretty stellar strawberry, rhubarb, sour cream crumble pie! Pro-tip: If you ask Paul or Michele really nicely, they’ll add a slice of sharp cheddar to your slice.

4. Slightly down the road, in the summer months you’ll find Beaver Valley Orchard and Cidery. It’s the perfect place to while away a sunny afternoon over a cheese plate and a couple glasses of award-winning Ontario craft cider.

5. Alas, Heathcote is so small, you’ll have to leave town for dinner. Not to worry, 15 minutes down the road you’ll find #FeastOn Certified Bruce Wine Bar! There you’ll find wood-fired pizzas, creative small plates and one of the province’s best wine lists.
