Perfect Weekends: London

London is forging a reputation as a great culinary destination. The areas chefs, restaurants and farmers markets are dedicated to developing a distinct regional culinary identity. You can easily spend an entire week wandering through markets and grazing your way through it’s various neighbourhoods.

We love the brewing culture that’s been built up over the last decade. So, as local beer lovers — here’s how we’d spend the Perfect Weekend in London, Ontario!

1. Definitely plan to stop into Toboggan Brewing Co.  Besides serving great grub in their brew pub, they’re pouring some of the region’s most beloved beer — try the Mr. Insurance Man Blonde and if you can get your hands on it, the seasonal strawberry rhubarb cider!

2. Meat lovers and vegeterains alike flock to Plant Matter Kitchen on Wortley. We loved this spot for brunch, particularly the morning after. Get the Huevos Rancheros — scrambled tofu with refried beans, salsa, guacamole & corn chips, vegan sour cream & seed-based cheese sauce.

3. For those looking to stroll through pristine stacks of produce and people watch, there’s no better place than Covent Garden Market. Located at the junction of King & Talbot Streets, it’s the living, breathing, edible soul of the city. In the warmer months, it overflows outdoors on Thursdays and Saturdays. There’s also free cooking classes and live music!

4. Take in the local art scene at DNA Art Space. This privately owned gallery showcases the work of some seriously talented contemporary artists, as well as a cool collection of zines, monographs and other printed oddities in its bookshop.

5. Dinner has us heading for Milos’ Craft Beer Emporium. See a trend? London is becoming a hotbed for brewing culture — and Milos’ is no exception! They’ve got 23 micro taps and at least 2 casks tapped at any given time.

BONUS: Baseball lovers take note! London is spitting distance from the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in St. Mary’s. The museum includes an amazing 32-acre site with three wonderful ball fields and one unique historical museum. It’s the perfect way to work up a thirst for all that delicious craft beer the region is famous for.
