Perfect Weekends: Bloomfield

When we say ‘The County’, lots of people think Picton — and lots of others think wine country. While both have their merits — like this awesome new Feast On Certified dinner series by Jamie Kennedy or the vintage movie screenings at The Regent — there’s a lot to be said about the small town charms of Bloomfield.

This tiny town may not be on the water, but it’s quickly becoming the beating heart of the area. It’s an excellent home base for exploring wine country, and for those who love the beach but aren’t keen on camping — is only a short drive for the beaches and dunes of Sandbanks Provincial Park.

In short, it’s easy to find your next perfect weekend in Bloomfield, Ontario! Here’s what ours would look like:

  1. The perfect weekend needs the perfect nights sleep. Our dream spot to lay our heads in The Babylon Log House at Angeline’s. Owner Alex  took an abandoned white cedar cabin, cataloged it, moved it 33km and rebuilt it with all the modern conveniences a weary traveler could need! It’s amazingly charming.
  2. Beat the summer heat before hitting Main Street at Slickers Ice Cream. It’s located right in the centre of town, at the crossroads of Mill Street and Main Street. We love the Ontario Rhubarb & Ginger flavour — but won’t ever say no to a scoop or two of the Blackberry and County Cab Sauv!
  3. Once you’ve downed that double scoop, meander around the shops on Main Street to work up an appetite. Pop into Kokito for cool, Canadian made things like wool blankets, cutting boards and off-the-cuff accessories.
  4. Definitely make a pitstop at Hand Works Fine Art for a look see at all the oddities collected on the lawn and in the shop. Once you’re done exploring, take a peak on the lawn. On weekends in the summer, when she’s not at an event, there’s the tiniest of taco carts set up by the curb.  Fiery fillings using County ingredients and handmade tortillas are just the beginning! Check the Slow Taco Facebook to find out where she’ll be popping up next.
  5. Once you’re full of tacos, and the sun begins to set, head to The Speakeasy below Agrarian Bistro. Here you’ll find live music, craft brews on tap, great ciders, wine and of course, killer cocktails. If you’re still hungry after all those tacos, we recommend The Ploughman — loaded with Ontario cheeses, housemade pork terrine, hunter salami and pickled things.
