Wines of Local: Cattail Creek Riesling

From The County to the Escarpment to Lake Erie and beyond, Ontario is growing some beautiful grapes and turning them into some of the best winesAwe’veAever had! AThis season, OCTAs staff are pouring their 12 favorite #LCBOgolocal wines just in time for the upcoming holiday season.ACome discover whats in our glass!

There’s a reason that the Summer of Riesling promotion is so popular. Here at the OCTA office, we think it should be all year long…and this week’s pick makes a convincing argument!

Cattail Creek

This award-winning Niagara-on-the-Lake winery spans four generations and has some of the oldest vines in Niagara, with the first planting occurring in 1956. ATwenty years later, the Epp (now Dyck) family played trailblazer again, becoming one of the first farmers to plant Riesling vines in the region.

They may be among the most mature rows in Ontario, but Cattail Creek’s Riesling grapes are far from past their prime. ATheir 2012 Estate Series Riesling is brimming with bright, citrusy notes. Crisp but not too sweet, this is a smooth, refreshing sipper that goes down easy. Maybe a little too easy (we recommend buying at least two bottles!).
