In 2013, shortly after it first began producing cheese, a Gunn’s Hill Artisan Cheese product was named best firm cheese at the Canadian Cheese Grand Prix. This is a testament to the hand-made quality that has put the local cheese plant’s tasty products in high demand across Ontario and garnered interest from the rest of the country.

The producer’s cheeses are in such demand from both consumers and grocery chains that the company’s current annual production capacity of 30 tonnes can no longer meet consumer appetite for its products. Gunn’s Hill wants to boost production by adding a new 2,000 square-foot, climate-controlled curing and aging space to their existing building. Winning the $100,000 Grand Prize would allow the plant to build this addition, thereby doubling production, doubling its workforce, and creating a new line of premium aged cheeses.

BOOSTING A RURAL COMMUNITY’S AGRICULTURAL ECONOMY

?Our expansion will bring more employment to a rural area challenged to retain its young people, generate work for local construction trades, and increase our capacity to produce high quality cheese,? says Shep. ?There is a lot of demand for our products across Ontario which we can’t meet right now. This new building won’t just allow us to keep up: it will also prepare us for an eventual expansion across Canada.?

VOTE TO HELP GUNN’S HILL ARTISAN CHEESE PUT GREAT LOCAL FOOD ON THE TABLE

?Fine cheese, like fine wine, improves with age and becomes more valuable,? says Shep. ?Not only will our expansion allow us to boost production and double our workforce, but it will also allow us to expand our premium cheese menu. The market for specialty cheese has enjoyed double-digit growth for the past 10 years. Winning would mean a lot to our business and the local economy we support, so vote for us if you love cheese and want to see our products in specialty stores across Canada.?
