Rare was opened in 2007 by Chef Brad Watt, and his wife Katie after they moved to Peterborough to settle and start their family. Brad had previously lived in the area for many years, and saw the need for a place that focused on high-quality food without the pretentiousness that often accompanies it. Running a successful restaurant in Peterborough for many years, Chef Brad and Katie decided to take it out into the woods!

The ‘CAMPKITCHEN’ began as a light-hearted outdoor solution to taking care of their mental health while dealing with the stress of owning and operating a restaurant during the pandemic. It went from an occasional weekend retreat to an irresistible life calling that they simply could not ignore. They developed a business plan that fused their love for the culinary arts and the great outdoors together. Not long after they decided to sell their beloved restaurant ‘Rare’ in the city. It hasn’t been an easy path, but it’s been an authentic one, and they can’t wait to share their story with you on one of their outdoor culinary experiences in The Kawarthas!
