Great news! The Gananoque Brewing Company, a local brewer in eastern Ontario, will soon be hosting a Amonth-long Harvest Festival to promote local food! The festival will be taking place from August 22nd to Sept 21st, 2014.
The festival will explore the farm-to-table ethos by offering farm visits, apple picking, hops harvesting, tours of food processors, and expanded farmers markets. Local restaurants will be encouraged to offer ‘harvest festival dishes,’ featuring locally-grown grub.
?It’s a great way to sell our area,? Bruce Davis, president of Gananoque Brewing Company, said. ?We should be proud of the work that our farmers and processors and chiefs and brewmasters are doing.?
To help fund the festival, GBC will be using up to $110,000 of funding that they were granted from Ontarios Local Food Fund, part of theAOntario Ministry of Agriculture and Foods Local Food Act. The provincial money is dollar-for-dollar matching GBC’s own funds, depending on how much can be raised locally from municipalities, tourism groups and companies. Davis’s brewing company has committed $10,000 and he intends to approach the councils of Gananoque and the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands for grants.
?Im a strong supporter of the Gananoque Brewing Companys Harvest Festival because its aAtremendous way to showcase the outstanding local flavours our region has to offer visitors and areaAresidents alike,? said Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark. ?Im proud the province has recognized the valueAof this festival to our local economy through the financial support of the Ministry of Agriculture andAFood and I look forward to more community partners becoming involved to help make our debut eventAeven more successful.?
Jeff Leal, Minister of Rural Affairs, echoed Clark’s sentiment, saying: ?The Gananoque Brewing Company Harvest Festival will give visitors and residents alike great opportunities to experience local food and beverages through a variety of interesting agri-tourism activities. When we support the good things that are grown in Ontario, we create jobs, strengthen rural communities and grow our economy.?
