The Butter Tart Taste-Off will bring pastry chefs to Peterboroughs Morrow Building during the Peterboroughs Farmers Market on Saturday, September 24th, 2016. Bakeries from all over the Kawarthas-Northumberland region will compete for butter tart bragging rights.
Awards will be given for Best Overall Plain Butter Tart, Best Locally Sourced Tart, Best Gluten Free Tart, and the often-quirky-but-always-delicious Best Alternative Butter Tart.
Last year’s competition was fierce. As with this year, the Taste-Off saw awards given for best overall plain butter tart, best locally-sourced butter tart, best alternative butter tart and Peoples Choice. The winners, in the same order, were Sweet Kitchen, The Whistle Stop, Yellow Cake Bakery and Doo Doos Bakery.
Rumour has it, this year will have these barons of butter tarts bringing some pretty whacky concoctions with them to the competition!
We spoke to one baker who was on a mission to combine the tangy-velvety taste of a lemon meringue pie with a butter tart, while another was attempting to fuse their favorite chocolate bar with a runny, pecan butter tart.
Needless to say, the tasting portion of the day is going to be amazing — whatever your preference.
