The Great Taste of Ontario Beer Lovers Tour of Toronto

‘Tis the season to snuggle up with a strong stout or a pretty porter at one of Toronto’s many craft breweries. Whether you’re looking to indulge in the latest creation or pick up a sixer to put under your favorite friend’s tree – one of these Toronto craft breweries is sure to please.

Don’t forget to download your Great Taste of Ontario passport before hitting the pavement and then check-in along the way! Every stop will bring you one step closer to sweet swag (like handmade cutting board by Otter Creek Woodworks!) or better yet, a donation to a local charity like Foodshare or Second Harvest. It’s really a win-win.

Start your brewery adventures at…

Black Oak Brewing Company

75 Horner Ave, Etobicoke, ON    blackoakbeer.com

This long-standing brewery recently underwent a rebrand but the quality in the can remains. We’re big fans of their Nut Brown Ale – a beer for all occasions, but wouldn’t say no a seasonal sipper like the Gingerbread Wheat or Triple Chocolate Cherry Stout when it came time to gather around the holiday table. Pick up a few of those for good measure.

Then, head to…

Great Lakes Brewery

30 Queen Elizabeth Blvd, Etobicoke, ON    greatlakesbeer.com

Want to tell you weird uncle he’s a Pompous Ass? GLB has a beer for that. Need a brew that will break the ice with your grandpa? They have one for that too. Great Lakes Brewery has been making good beer for all sorts of Ontarians for decades and now, they’re making vodka sodas too. While you’re there, donate to Hops for Hunger – their way of supporting the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Now, hop in a cab and head for…

High Park Brewing Company

839 Runnymede Rd, Toronto, ON    highparkbrewery.com

We’d suggest adding a few sours to your bottle box at this west end bottle shop. Start with the Purple Haze a plum sour with that’s pleasantly tart and decidedly thirst-quenching, then add an Ice Cream Truck – a cherry sorbet sour that screams of summer sun. Something you and your buds will need on those long dark January nights.

Then, head down the road to…

Indie Ale House

2876 Dundas St W, Toronto, ON    indiealehouse.com

Hungry? This is the place to grab a bite. You can share some noshables like hand cut fries or crispy buffalo cauliflower – but we recommend ordering your own Maui Wowie Fried Chicken Sandwich. You won’t want to share. Pair that with a flight of their seasonals and you won’t be disappointed.

Then, head over to another west end favorite…

Henderson Brewing Co

128A Sterling Rd, Toronto, ON    hendersonbrewing.com

You’re in the city proper now. And the names these brews pay homage to the best stories you’ll find. On offer right now is the Pearson Express IPA and RUSH, their tribute to the 17 time platinum, 7 time Grammy nominated, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees RUSH.

Now, take the scenic waterside route (i.e. the Lakeshore) to…

Eastbound Brewing Company Inc.

700 Queen St E, Toronto, ON    eastboundbeer.com

Food lovers flock to this eastside brewery because of it’s food friendly brews. We’re fans of the ‘Let’s Go Exploring’ Double Dry Hopped IPA and the Slack Tide Hazy Session NEIPA – but any of their food-friendly creations would be a great gift for your foodies friends this season.

Then migrate over to…

Left Field Brewery

36 Wagstaff Dr, Toronto, ON    leftfieldbrewery.ca

Whether your like baseball or not, these beers are going to be a homerun in the gift giving department. Keep things seasonal and festive with their trio of Blackburne Imperial Stouts. They come in Original, Rum Barrel Aged and Chocolate Orange varieties.

Before making your way to…

Radical Road Brewing Co.

1177 Queen St E, Toronto, ON    radicalroadbrew.com

Pick up a couple of their fruit forward beers (we’re thinking the Yuzu Radler, the Straight Up Watermelon Sour and the Cucumber Mint Kolsch) and then grab a bottle of the downright magical Indigo Metamorphosis Gin for hat extra special someone on your list. This premium gin magically changes from a deep indigo to a radiant lilac, when mixed with tonic. The butterfly flower that enables this metamorphosis adds an earthy feel to this botanical blend that highlights juniper, rosemary & cucumber.

Hungry? Time for…

Amsterdam Brewing Company

87 Laird Dr. East York, ON    amsterdambeer.com

Amsterdam Brewing Co has a few locations in the city, but we’re partial to their Leaside barrelhouse. It’s located only 400 steps away from their main production Brewery, so there’s a high probably you’ll find their one-offs and experiments in the cold case. This season, we’ll be sipping their Neon Haze – it’s a hazy gold IPA with intense floral, lemon-lime, grapefruit, peach and tropical fruit tones.

Now, head eastward to…

Common Good Brewing

475 Ellesmere Rd., Scarborough, ON      commongoodbeer.com

This Scarborough-based (and proud!) brewery is all about community and one peek into their beer fridge proves it. They contract brew a lot of your favorite Toronto beers in their massive facility and have them on offer in the Craft Brew Store.

If you’re feeling adventurous, there are five more breweries on the Great Taste of Ontario Passport. They are Granite Brewery, Muddy York Brewing Company, Northern Maverick Brewing, Saulter Street Brewery and Toronto’s OG craft brewer: Steam Whistle Brewing. Check into all 15 and you’ll get to redeem a Great Taste of Ontario prize!
