Plan the Perfect Staycation in Burlington

Written by: Julie-Marie Innes

Late summer and early fall is the perfect time for a staycation or getaway and beautiful Burlington is ready to welcome you. We don’t want you to just pass us by; stay and discover all that we have to offer.

After your morning coffee and croissant at one of our quaint downtown cafes, head towards the lake to Burlington’s newly transformed cultural destination, the Joseph Brant Museum. Named after the city’s first citizen, Mohawk Chief Joseph Brant, ‘Thayendanegea’, the spacious structure is anchored by a replica of Brant’s 1800 homestead. Permanent displays carefully detail Burlington’s rich history. Nostalgia buffs will appreciate the tribute to the former Brant Inn where the greats of the Jazz and Big Band era performed in the ’40s to ’60s. Take in the current exhibit, Health in Space: Daring to Explore which demystifies the health challenges that astronauts face while living and working in space.

One block and one stoplight away, is the Art Gallery of Burlington. Here, local artisans showcase their creations in a variety of mediums including the largest collection of Canadian ceramics. Admission is free and plan a stop at the one of a kind gift shop to get a gift for a loved one or perhaps a new treasure for yourself.

You must have worked up an appetite by now, so why not stop and enjoy a delicious meal at Spencer’s at the Waterfront. Sit on their beautiful patio overlooking Lake Ontario. Their specialty is sustainable seafood and fresh seasonal produce. Or, how about a mouth-watering steak paired with an award-winning Ontario wine? Their friendly servers always put your comfort and safety first and yes, reservations are a must.

It’s a beautiful time for a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens. Burlington is fortunate to be home to these astounding gardens, the largest botanical gardens in Canada. Escape amongst the natural wonder as you wander and take in the sights and scents. Enjoy lunch or dinner at one of their Feast-On certified restaurants or enjoy an afternoon tea at their Tea House located in Hendrie Park.
