Autumn is officially here folks! Which means it’s time to squeeze in as much time as possible in the great outdoors before we don our boots and hats and find excuses to stay in cuddling with some blankets and hot chocolate. It also means that harvest season is upon us, when the earth sends us the seasons best bounty almost as an apology for the wind and ice we’ll be dealing with for the next five or six months. Basically, we think it’s of the utmost importance that you take advantage of this time of year.
Which is why we suggest heading to Wellington County and Guelph for their Fall Rural Romp on Saturday, September 26 from 10-4. The Rural Romp is a self-guided tour through the county where you can chose your own adventure from their map outlining farms and markets that are taking part. Don’t worry about getting lost along the way, there is directional signage along the route to keep you on track!
With 11 possible stops on the tour there is something for everyone, and the best part about self-guided tours is that you can pick and chose the stops that appeal most to you. Choices include everything from alpaca or elk farms to catering companies with complimentary apple pie smoothies (yum!) to hay rides and buggy tours.
This also provides a fantastic opportunity to meet face to face with members of your community who’s food you may eat or products you may use which we are all about. Who knows? You might even learn a thing or two!
If you’re looking to express your artistic side there is also a photography contest with three categories: farmscapes, family fun on the farm and food (farm fresh or prepared). There are three local food prize packs to be had for this contest so don’t forget your camera.
Maps can be found ahead of time at any of the participating location, picked up at the event or downloaded and printed!
Make sure to check out the website for full details on the stops and the photography contest. They also have some helpful romp hints like bringing a cooler and remembering to leave pets at home.
