Escape the City… take a Canoe and Beach Dining Adventure with the Culinary Adventure Company! Last Tuesday evening, we joined them on a leisurely paddle to the beautiful Toronto Islands for a feast not to be forgotten. We hopped in a heritage freighter canoe, a replica of those used by early Canadian settlers and paddled out across the stretch of Lake Ontario between the big city and the island. With professional canoe guides to lead the way, we drifted past sailboats and ferries enjoying the last of the day’s summer sun. Watching the sky above as planes took off and landed at Billy Bishop right above our heads, we made our way to the bird sanctuary. After some nature watching–and appetite building!–we made our way to Centre Island for dinner. The feast Chef Scott and his team roll out is unlike any picnic I’ve ever been to. Cured trout, roast lamb, blueberry mostarda, fresh pea stuffed chicken wrapped in prosciutto, fresh flambeed Ontario peaches… the list goes on and on! The menu changes as the summer moves on, featuring the freshest edibles Ontario has to offer. With our bellies full and the sun setting, we gathered our things for the paddle home–meandering amongst the streams and water ways of the island. We even got a glimpse of the Centre Island Farm horses heading to bed! It’s amazing how different the air feels just across the canal. Without the concrete and high rises holding the heat, the air was fresh and crisp. As we turned the corner away from Centre Island, the group couldn’t but stop in awe of the view! The entire city, lit up in all it’s night time glory was in front of us. With the planes landing above us and the bright lights to guide the way, this was an adventure not to be forgotten. I can’t wait to share it with my adventure hungry friends!
