The Second Annual Kawarthas Northumberland Butter Tart Tour Taste-Off held at the Fenelon Falls Country Living Show on Saturday, May 3, 2013, has crowned three winners from a field of nine bakeries.
In front of a crowd of on-lookers, a panel of celebrity judges tasted and ranked 14 very different and all delicious butter tarts from plain to Double Chocolate and Cranberry Pecan to Apple. The group of judges enjoyed expressing their preferences about whether the quintessential butter tart should be firm or runny, with raisins or without � with the final decision evenly and passionately split.
In the end, three bakeries were dubbed favourites in five categories, as determined by the judges and through public voting:
- Best Crust � Doo Doo�s Bakery in Bailieboro
- Best Filling � Whistle Stop CafA� in Peterborough
- Best Specialty Butter Tart � Apple Butter Tart -A�Burnham Family Farms
- People�s Choice � Whistle Stop CafA� in Peterborough
- Best Overall � Doo Doo�s Bakery in Bailieboro
The team of celebrity judges included: Kawartha Lakes Mayor, Ric McGee; Chef Brian Henry, Brian Henry Private Chef Services; Carrie O, on-air personality at BOB-FM; Erica Patterson, Erica�s Edibles blogger; a ?mystery judge? plucked from the audience… and me! Mike Judson from CHEX-TV served as emcee.
June has been designated Butter Tart Month by Ontario, and in honour of that, the winning bakery in the category of ?Best Overall? earns the right for a contract to have their tarts represent the Kawarthas Northumberland Butter Tart Tour at the kick-off to Ontario Tourism Week next month. This event will occur on Friday, June 6that Yonge Dundas Square in downtown Toronto.
The goal is to unite three provincial players– The Buttertart Tour, The Buttertart Trail and Toronto’s own Tartistry — in a joint butter tart promotion with the Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance. A�Hey that’s us!
