Last week, we had the chance to attend the annual Kawarthas 100 Mile Dinner.
Now, this wasn’t your ordinary harvest dinner. It really was a community enterprise, with proceeds from the evening going to support Kawartha Farm Fresh initiatives and the United Way.
We tasted our way through some of the regions most celebrated ‘tastes’ including Mariposa Dairy chevre and bandaged cheddar, Allin’s Orchards apples (and that wickedly delicious applesauce pictured above), Lunar Rhythm Gardens vegetables and, of course, Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream.
The dinner was also an opportunity for a sneak peak at this weekend’s Butter Tart Taste-Off. Arglye Farm Market, Bobcaygeon Bakery, Buttertarts N More, Little Pie Shack, Pantry Shelf and Sweet Buttons Coffee all brought their classic butter tarts to the table. I had the chance to try a classic buttertart to Bobcaygeon Bakery — the filling was firm, but not custard-y firm, more like a nice caramel filling, and the pastry was that perfect thin stack of flaky layers that I love so much. A winner in my books!
