VQA Economic Impact Study Released

By Julia Gilmore on February 8th, 2012

The Wine Council of Ontario has recently released its economic impact study.
It held some very promising results of its VQA Ontario wines.

VQA Ontario is the agency responsible for the regulation and integrity of local wine appellations, which include: The Niagara Peninsula, Pelée Island, Lake Erie North Shore and Prince Edward County.

The VQA wine industry has grown 40% over the past 5 years and still continues to weather the economic storms.  Every liter of local VQA wines purchased, contributes $12.29 back to Ontario’s economy. The increased sales of local wine also aids in the creation of over 1300 new jobs within the industry.  This relates to a $191M earning for the province, producers and their employees in 2010.

The bottom line is that Ontario has been continuing to create some exceptional wines. Wines that express local quality are increasingly popular, and it is evident through Ontarian’s spending dollars. In 2011, 26% of all wine sold in the LCBO was VQA Ontario. This totals $269M in overall sales, a 51% increase since 2007.

However, the sales don’t stop at the LCBO’s doorway. Year after year, there has been an increase in travelling to experience Wine Country Ontario . With four exceptional viticulture areas, our love of wine is extended. There is a passion to explore the opportunity of enjoying these wines first hand as vineyard tours and wine tastings continue to become popular day trips and destinations.

Next time you’re travelling to the province or exploring around Ontario, be sure to add a glass of VQA to your meal  – it’s good for our economy and for you!
