13th Street Winery

We are committed to creating wines of distinction from the rolling acres of our estate vineyards in Niagara.

Past

Founded in 1998, 13th Street Winery specializes in small lots of estate grown and handcrafted table and sparkling wines. The original partners (Douglas, Funk, Jacobson and Willms families) had been active in the wine industry for several decades. At a social event in 1997, the partners decided to build on the extensive wine growing and winemaking talent in the group, and created an enterprise that expressed their common interest in a good bottle of realistically priced wine. With the birth of Thirteenth Street Wine Corp. in 1998, came a new Niagara winery that specialized in small lots of estate grown and hand-crafted table and sparkling wines. The enterprise quickly became a labour of love and on any given day there was a fair chance that you would find one or more of the partners at the winery working on the current vintage. After 10 years of producing a range of exceptional, critically acclaimed wines, the partners decided it was time to move on to new life adventures and on September 1, 2008 the winery was sold.

Present

The new owners bring with them considerable viticulture, sales and marketing expertise and plan to slowly increase the winery’s total production as new estate vineyards come on line. The winery’s resounding success through the first 10 years with hand-crafted traditional method sparkling wines, Gamay, Riesling and Chardonnay ensures these will make up the core of the product line into the future with limited releases of other small batch varietal and blended wines. To that end, significant investments have been made with the purchase of new, state of the art winemaking equipment and new estate vineyards, some of which have been planted in the spring of 2008.

In the fall of 2009, a new production and hospitality facility opened on Route 77 (a.k.a. 4th Avenue) in St. Catharines. This new facility comes with wonderful opportunities for the winery to continuously improve quality across the range while at the same time expanding production over the next several years. The new facility will be equipped with expanded tasting areas including a separate room that will be available for private bookings for tasting and wine education classes. In addition the new site will boast a new retail area, a fully equipped kitchen for select events and seminars where food will be required. The new facility even has an exclusive members ‘clubhouse’ for use by our Cellar Door Club Members when they are touring Niagara wine country. Production of select wines will continue at the 13th Street winery facility, as will limited access by the public for certain special events. Ultimately, our goal is to have two production areas in order to provide our winemaker with maximum space and flexibility.
