Join our chef facilitators and special guests in a series of hands-on cooking workshops for children aged 8–12. Kids will experiment in the kitchen, learn to cook and find out about the importance of making good food choices—all while having fun!

Winter 2013
Toronto is a city with many cultural backgrounds and citizens from all over the world and this is reflected in our cuisine. This session, we’ll explore the ways we can integrate eating locally and seasonally while maintaining our culture identity.
January 12: Getting to Know Your Kitchen
Learn how to set up your personal work area in the kitchen (mise en place), including rules and procedures regarding safety, working environment and cleaning.

Kids will be introduced to the basic ingredients and techniques of French cuisine.
January 26: Mi piace mangiare la pasta
Guest: Chef John Sinopli from Table 17 and Ascari Enoteca
Learn how to make homemade Italian pasta!
February 2: Visit the Farmers’ Market
Children will take a stroll through our Farmers’ Market, with a focus on getting to know the farmers, what they grow, how they grow it and what is in season. After, it’s back to the kitchen to create a delicious dish!
February 9: Celebrate Chinese New Year
Guest: Melissa Yu
Joining in the festivities at the Farmers’ Market, children will learn how to prepare Chinese dumplings and stories about the meaning of Chinese New Year.
February 16: Feasting Irish Style

Potatoes, turnips and all the roots cooked to perfection with an added green garnish!
February 23: Viva Mejico!! Maiz, Tortilla, Taquitos
Guest: Gabriela Iturate from Maizal Restaurant
Experience making tortillas from scratch and other dishes made with masa de maiz (corn dough)—learning the traditions and flavours of Mexican cuisine. Plus, children will learn about spouting techniques and use sprouts grown in our grow tubes to garnish the tortillas—he perfect way to eat great greens in the middle of winter!
March 2: Last Day Celebration
Children will cook a dish together that will be offered at their very own booth at the Farmers’ Market. They will also have an opportunity to talk about what they cooked and how they cooked it while raising funds to support our Children’s Food Program bursary, helping children from underserved communities to take part in our programs.
