Maple Syrup – Feeding Family Traditions

By Julia Gilmore

When I was a kid I used to spend every school Holiday visiting my grandparents. The spring meant the snow would be thawing and nature would come alive – but best of all, the sap was running. Every March Break, my Grandfather would tap his maple trees and begin collecting sap. The taps were always in the trees before my brother and I got there so we were left to check the buckets and sample the sap. By our last weekend, the sap was always cooking. We could smell it in the sweetened air as it evaporated along with our Holiday. This undoubtedly left just enough mystery and fascination to want to come back as an adult now and do it from the beginning.

A return to history in Prince Edward County

By Rebecca LeHeup

Time is remarkable. While it seems like only yesterday that I moved from Kelowna, B.C. to Prince Edward County, Ontario, it was actually sixteen years ago! I can recall arriving in Picton, a 21 year-old ski bum who wasn’t sure what her new life in rural Ontario was going to amount to. It didn’t take me long to realize the potential of the region and get involved in culinary tourism. It began with me going into partnership with Grant Howes from the County Cider Co. and opening a Canadian gourmet food gift shop within his 1800′s pig barn come tasting room.
